失败以后 After failing

失败是成功之母。

shī bài shì chéng gōng zhī mǔ

Failure is the mother of success.

只要功夫深，铁杵磨成针。

zhǐ yào gōng fu shēn tiě chǔ mó chéng zhēn

With enough effort, an iron rod can be ground into a needle.

上学期的科学考试，我只考了五十八分，没有及格。

shàng xué qī de kē xué kǎo shì wǒ zhǐ kǎo le wǔ shí bā fēn méi yǒu jí gé

In last semester's science test, I only scored 58 marks and didn't pass.

拿到试卷的时候，我难过得说不出话来。

ná dào shì juàn de shí hou wǒ nán guò de shuō bu chū huà lái

When I got the paper back, I was so upset I couldn't say a word.

回家后，爸爸没有责怪我，而是陪我一起把错题一道一道地看了一遍。

At home, Dad didn't blame me. Instead he went through the wrong answers with me, one by one.

我发现，很多题目不是不会做，而是我太粗心，没有看清楚问题。

I found that for many questions, it wasn't that I couldn't do them; I was too careless and didn't read the question properly.

于是，我给自己订了一个学习计划：每天复习半个小时，做完练习一定要检查。

yú shì wǒ gěi zì jǐ dìng le yí gè xué xí jì huà měi tiān fù xí bàn gè xiǎo shí zuò wán liàn xí yí dìng yào jiǎn chá

So I drew up a study plan for myself: revise for half an hour every day, and always check my work after finishing exercises.

刚开始的时候，我常常想偷懒，可是一想到那张试卷，我就坚持了下来。

At first I often wanted to slack off, but whenever I thought of that test paper, I kept going.

In the end-of-year exam, I scored 86 marks.

我明白了，失败并不可怕，只要找出原因，努力改正，就一定会进步。

I understood that failure isn't frightening at all. As long as you find out why and work hard to correct it, you will surely improve.

How do you know the girl did well in her test?

范例：因为试卷上写着九十分，旁边还有一颗金色的星星。女孩也笑得很开心，所以我知道她考得很好。

Because the test paper says 90 marks and there is a gold star beside it. The girl is smiling happily too, so I know she did well.

What is the study plan on the wall for?

范例：学习计划可以帮助女孩安排每天要做的事情。她每完成一项，就打一个勾。这样，她就能一步一步地进步，不会偷懒。

xué xí jì huà kě yǐ bāng zhù nǚ hái ān pái měi tiān yào zuò de shì qing tā měi wán chéng yí xiàng jiù dǎ yí gè gōu zhè yàng tā jiù néng yí bù yí bù de jìn bù bú huì tōu lǎn

The study plan helps the girl organise what she needs to do each day. Each time she finishes an item, she makes a tick. This way she can improve step by step and won't slack off.

If you did badly in a test, what would you do?

I think what he did is wrong. Cheating in a test is dishonest, and even with high marks they wouldn't show his real ability. Also, if the teacher found out, he would be punished.

Talk about a time you kept at something.

范例：去年，我参加了学校的游泳训练。刚开始时，我连一条泳道都游不完，常常想放弃。可是教练鼓励我每天多练习一点。三个月后，我终于能游完两百米了。我心里非常自豪，也明白了坚持的重要。

Last year I joined the school's swimming training. At first I couldn't even finish one lane and often wanted to give up. But the coach encouraged me to practise a bit more every day. Three months later, I could finally swim 200 metres. I was very proud, and I understood how important it is to keep going.

I think there are a few ways. First, do homework first after getting home, then play. Also, pay attention in class and ask when you don't understand. Most importantly, revise regularly instead of cramming at the last minute before a test.

老师：你觉得考试成绩是不是最重要的？为什么？

nǐ jué de kǎo shì chéng jì shì bu shì zuì zhòng yào de wèi shén me

Do you think test results are the most important thing? Why?

范例：我觉得考试成绩很重要，但不是最重要的。成绩只能说明一段时间的学习情况。更重要的是我们有没有学到知识，有没有养成好的品德。

I think test results are important, but not the most important thing. Results only show how you studied over a short time. What matters more is whether we have really learned, and whether we have built good character.
