What Are Peribahasa?

Peribahasa are traditional Malay proverbs — short, fixed expressions that carry cultural wisdom and moral lessons. Passed down through generations, they reflect values such as diligence, gratitude, humility, and community. Learning peribahasa enriches a child’s vocabulary, deepens cultural understanding, and adds elegance to their writing.

Unlike everyday language, peribahasa use vivid imagery and metaphor. For example, “Bagai aur dengan tebing” (like bamboo and the riverbank) describes a mutually supportive relationship — the bamboo holds the bank together while the bank supports the bamboo’s roots.

Why Peribahasa Is Essential for UPSR

Peribahasa is directly tested in the UPSR Bahasa Melayu examination. In Paper 1, students must match proverbs to their correct meanings or identify which proverb fits a given situation. In Paper 2, students who weave peribahasa into their essays and comprehension answers earn higher language marks.

Teachers often recommend that students memorise at least 50–80 peribahasa by P5, with exposure starting as early as P2. Regular practice through worksheets helps students move peribahasa from passive recognition to active use.

How Our Worksheets Work

Our peribahasa worksheets use two exercise formats to build both recognition and understanding:

For younger learners (P1–P2), simpler and more commonly heard proverbs are used. For P5–P6, the worksheets include more advanced proverbs and require students to apply them in context.

How to Use Peribahasa in UPSR Essays

Knowing peribahasa is one thing; using them well in a karangan is another. Examiners reward natural, contextually appropriate use — and penalise forced or wrong-meaning usage. Here are three worked examples showing how to weave peribahasa into common essay topics:

Essay topic: “Kepentingan Bersatu Padu” (The importance of unity)

Sample sentence:

“Sebagaimana peribahasa ‘bersatu teguh, bercerai roboh’, sesebuah masyarakat hanya akan maju jika rakyatnya bekerjasama dan saling membantu antara satu sama lain.”

The proverb is integrated with sebagaimana peribahasa — a clean introduction phrase that signals to the examiner you’re using a known saying intentionally. Avoid just dropping a proverb without context; always tie it to the point you’re making.

Essay topic: “Sikap Tidak Berputus Asa” (Never giving up)

Sample sentence:

“Walaupun terpaksa berhempas-pulas, Aminah terus berusaha kerana dia percaya ‘sedikit-sedikit, lama-lama jadi bukit’ — setiap usaha kecil pasti akan membuahkan hasil pada akhirnya.”

Notice how the meaning of the proverb is briefly explained after the proverb itself (setiap usaha kecil…). This double-up technique tells the examiner you understand the saying, not just memorised it.

Essay topic: “Pengalaman Yang Tidak Dapat Dilupakan” (An unforgettable experience)

Sample sentence:

“Saya rasa amat menyesal kerana telah lewat memohon maaf kepada ibu. Kini saya sedar bahawa ‘nasi sudah menjadi bubur’ dan saya hanya boleh berjanji untuk menjadi anak yang lebih baik pada masa hadapan.”

This example shows reflective use — the proverb expresses regret, a common P5–P6 essay theme. Use peribahasa sparingly: 2–3 well-placed proverbs per essay scores higher than 5–6 forced ones.
