The Order Worth Learning Times Tables In
Tables are usually taught in numerical order, 2 then 3 then 4, but that is not the order of difficulty. Learning the easy, highly patterned tables first gives a child a large stock of facts they already know, which shrinks the genuinely hard tables to a surprisingly small set. This order works better for most children:
Stage 1 — the free ones: 1, 2, 5, 10. Every answer follows an obvious pattern. Most children pick these up from counting alone, and together they cover a third of the whole grid.
Stage 2 — the patterned ones: 4, 9, 11. The 4s are double-doubles. The 9s have the digit-sum trick (the digits of every answer add to 9). The 11s repeat a digit up to 9×11. All three feel like shortcuts rather than memorisation.
Stage 3 — the awkward ones: 3, 6, 7, 8, 12. This is where drill genuinely earns its place. Once the earlier stages are secure and commutativity is understood (4×7 is the same as 7×4), the number of unknown facts left is far smaller than it looks — the hard core is roughly 6×7, 6×8, 7×8, 7×9 and 8×9.
The practical implication for drill sheets: do not spend equal time on every table. Once a child is fluent in stages 1 and 2, drilling 2s and 10s again is comfortable but pointless. Generate sheets aimed at the handful of facts that are still slow.
How Long and How Often to Drill
Drill works through frequency, not duration. Five minutes a day beats half an hour on a Sunday, because recall is strengthened by being retrieved often rather than by being practised for a long stretch. A page of twenty to thirty problems is about right for a daily sheet; a hundred-problem page mostly measures stamina.
Time the sheet, but compare a child only against their own previous time. Write the time at the top of each sheet and keep them — visible improvement is the thing that keeps a child willing to do the next one. Accuracy comes before speed: if more than about one in ten is wrong, the sheet is too hard or too fast, and slowing down will produce faster progress than pushing.
Stop while it is still going well. A child who finishes a sheet feeling capable will start the next one; a child who is pushed to a second and third sheet until they make mistakes learns that getting faster leads to more work.
Finding the Weak Table
Most children who seem “bad at times tables” are actually fluent in most of them and stuck on a handful. Marking a mixed drill sheet tells you which. Note the questions that were wrong or slow, and look for the pattern — it is usually one or two tables rather than a general weakness.
Once you know, generate a sheet that targets it. Because the drill generator produces a fresh random set each time, you can print the same configuration daily for a week without a child memorising the sequence of answers rather than the facts themselves — a real risk with a fixed worksheet.
Watch for finger-counting or visible pauses even on correct answers. A right answer that took four seconds is not yet a known fact, and it will fail later when it has to be used inside long multiplication or a fraction question. Fluency means immediate, not eventual.
Why Division Drills Belong Alongside Multiplication
Division facts are the same facts in reverse, but children rarely make the connection on their own. A child who answers 6×7 instantly may still stall on 42÷7, because they learned the multiplication table as a chant in one direction only. Mixing division into the same drill sheet forces the fact to be understood as a relationship between three numbers rather than a sequence to be recited.
This pays off directly in later work. Simplifying fractions, finding factors, long division and ratio all depend on recognising that 56 is 7×8 the moment you see it. Practising both directions from the start avoids the common situation where a child knows their tables but cannot use them.
Vertical or Horizontal Layout?
The two layout options are not just cosmetic. Horizontal problems (7 × 8 = ___) suit mental recall and fast timed drills. Vertical column format is the right choice once numbers get to two digits or more, because it gives space for written working and reinforces place-value alignment. A useful pattern is horizontal for daily fluency practice and vertical when introducing larger numbers or when carrying and borrowing are being learned.
