Preparing Your K2 Child for Primary 1 Math โ What to Practise and Why

The transition from Kindergarten 2 to Primary 1 (or Kindergarten to 1st Grade in the US) is one of the biggest leaps in a child's early education. Lessons get longer, expectations rise, and math moves from play-based exploration to structured problem-solving. The good news? A little targeted practice in the months before school starts can make a huge difference to your child's confidence on Day 1.
This guide covers the four core math skills your child should focus on โ and how to practise them at home without turning it into a chore.
1. Word Problems โ Learning to Read Math
Word problems are often the first type of math that surprises new Primary 1 children. In kindergarten, they add and subtract with objects or pictures. In Primary 1, the same sums are wrapped in sentences: "Tom had 5 apples. He gave 2 to Sara. How many does he have now?"
The math itself is easy โ but the reading comprehension layer is new. Children need to identify what's being asked, pick out the numbers, and decide whether to add or subtract. This is a skill that benefits enormously from practice.
Tip: Read the problem aloud together first. Ask your child to retell it in their own words before they try to solve it. This builds the habit of understanding before calculating.
2. Comparing Numbers โ Greater, Less, or Equal
Understanding which number is bigger or smaller seems basic, but it underpins everything from ordering to estimation. In Primary 1, children are expected to compare numbers up to 20 (and later up to 100) using the symbols >, < and =.
Many K2 children can already say "7 is bigger than 3" โ but writing it as "7 > 3" and understanding the symbol is a different skill. Regular practice with comparison worksheets helps bridge that gap.
A classic trick: the > and < symbols are like a hungry crocodile's mouth โ it always opens towards the bigger number. Children remember this for years.
3. Counting โ The Foundation of Everything
Counting sounds simple, but Primary 1 expects more than just reciting numbers. Your child should be able to:
- Count forwards and backwards from any starting point up to 20
- Fill in missing numbers in a sequence (e.g. 7, 8, ___, 10)
- Count on from a given number (e.g. "Start at 12 and count on 3 more")
- Understand that counting backwards relates to subtraction
Backward counting is especially important and often overlooked. If your child can confidently count backwards from 20, subtraction within 20 becomes much easier because they already have the mental framework.
Tip: Practise counting backwards during everyday moments โ counting down from 10 before the microwave beeps, or from 20 when tidying up toys. Make it a game, not a lesson.
4. Telling the Time โ Hours and Half-Hours
Clock reading is part of the Primary 1 curriculum, and it's one of the trickiest skills for young children. The analogue clock combines number recognition, spatial awareness, and a completely new concept: two hands meaning different things.
At the K2-to-P1 stage, focus on just two things:
- O'clock: The minute hand points to 12, the hour hand points to the number. "It's 3 o'clock."
- Half past: The minute hand points to 6, the hour hand is halfway between two numbers. "It's half past 7."
Don't rush into quarter past or five-minute intervals yet โ those come in Primary 2. A solid grasp of o'clock and half past is plenty for P1 readiness.
How Much Practice Is Enough?
Short and regular beats long and occasional. Aim for 10โ15 minutes a day, 4โ5 days a week. At this age, a worksheet with 5โ10 problems is ideal โ enough to build a habit without causing frustration. If your child finishes happily and wants more, that's a great sign. If they're struggling after 10 minutes, stop and try again tomorrow.

Common Mistakes Parents Make
- Starting too hard. If your child is struggling with numbers to 10, don't jump to 20. Master the smaller range first โ confidence grows from success, not struggle.
- Marathon sessions. A 45-minute worksheet session on a Saturday is far less effective than seven 10-minute sessions across the week. Young brains need repetition with rest in between.
- Only doing one type. Drilling nothing but addition gets boring fast. Mix in counting, clock reading and comparison to keep things engaging.
- Skipping the answer key. Going through mistakes together is where the real learning happens. Always check answers with your child โ celebrate what they got right and gently work through errors.
