What Changes Between K2 and Primary 1 Math
K2 math focuses on number sense — recognising digits, counting groups of objects, comparing quantities, and understanding "one more" and "one less". Most work involves concrete objects (counters, blocks, fingers) and pictures. Primary 1, by contrast, expects children to work with written number sentences (5 + 3 = 8), solve word problems on paper, and use mental strategies rather than always counting on their fingers.
The single biggest shift is from counting to recalling. A K2 child computing 4 + 3 typically counts up: "four... five, six, seven." A Primary 1 child should be able to retrieve 4 + 3 = 7 from memory, freeing mental capacity for harder problems. This recall is built through number bonds practice, which is why Primary 1 teachers emphasise it from day one.
The other significant change is the introduction of written maths language: the plus sign, minus sign, equals sign, and the convention of writing left-to-right. K2 children rarely encounter these symbols formally; Primary 1 children use them every day. Worksheets that bridge the gap show pictures alongside the symbols, then gradually phase out the pictures.
The K2→P1 Math Skill Progression
Skills accumulate roughly in this order. If your child can do each step confidently, they're ready for Primary 1:
- Count objects to 20. One-to-one correspondence: pointing at each object once and counting in order. Many K2 children rush and skip objects; slow, deliberate counting builds accuracy.
- Read and write numerals 0–20. The digits 13–19 cause the most trouble because the sound order doesn't match the writing order ("fourteen" sounds like "four-teen" but is written 14, not 41). Practise these explicitly.
- Compare two numbers. Which is bigger, 7 or 12? Introduce the greater-than (>) and less-than (<) symbols only after children can compare confidently in words.
- Number bonds to 10. 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5 — the foundational pairs of Primary 1. Mastery here makes everything that follows easier.
- Addition within 10. First with pictures or fingers, then mentally. Practice short sums (3 + 4, 5 + 2) until the child can answer in under three seconds without counting.
- Subtraction within 10. Often harder than addition for young children. Use the "take away" model with concrete objects before moving to the symbolic form.
- Number bonds and addition within 20. This is where many children get stuck. The key is recognising 10 as an anchor: 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 13. Worksheets that use "ten frames" make this strategy visible.
- Simple word problems. Translating a story into a number sentence is a separate skill from doing the calculation. Start with one-step problems and explicit keywords ("altogether", "left", "more").
Common Transition Struggles — And How to Address Them
Reversed digits. Many young children write 12 as 21 or 6 as a backwards 6. This is developmentally normal and usually corrects itself by mid-Primary-1. If it persists, casual tracing practice with pre-printed digits helps; flashcards work better than corrections in the moment.
Finger counting refuses to go away. Pre-Primary-1 children should use their fingers freely — it builds number sense. By Primary 1, gentle nudges toward recall ("can you remember 4 + 3 without counting?") shift them gradually. Don't ban finger counting; just praise mental recall when it happens.
Confusion between + and − signs. Children sometimes see + and read it as "and", then forget which operation to perform. Drill the symbols in isolation: write + and − on flashcards and have the child say "plus, add, together" or "minus, take away, subtract" within a second.
Word problem panic. A child who can compute 7 − 3 = 4 may freeze on "Sara had 7 sweets. She gave 3 away. How many are left?" The fix is to underline the numbers in the question, then the keyword ("gave away" ⇒ subtract), then write the number sentence. Practise the underlining habit explicitly.
What Primary 1 Math Looks Like in Term 1
The first term of Primary 1 (in Singapore and many other systems) typically covers numbers to 20, number bonds, addition and subtraction within 20, simple word problems, and basic 2D shape recognition. By the end of Term 1, most children are expected to:
- Read and write numbers to 20 in numeral and word form.
- Recall number bonds to 10 from memory.
- Add and subtract within 20 fluently, using number bonds or counting strategies.
- Solve one-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.
- Identify circles, squares, triangles, rectangles and describe their basic properties.
- Continue simple repeating patterns.
