Grade 3 Word Problem Types

Grade 3 is where multiplication and division stop being tables and start being situations. These seven sets cover the two different questions division can answer, remainders that mean something in context, and the multi-step problems where you multiply first and divide second. They are the hardest word problems on the site and the best preparation for upper-primary maths.

Interval problems are the classic trap: seven trees planted 10 metres apart span 60 metres, not 70, because you count the gaps between them. Division with a remainder is the other one — the answer is two numbers, and which one matters depends on whether you are filling tanks or sharing sweets.

What Changes at This Level

The jump into this tier is less about bigger numbers than about the number of steps a child has to hold in their head at once. Up to Grade 2, most questions have a single operation and the wording tells you which one. From here, a typical word problem needs two or three operations chosen in the right order, and the wording deliberately does not announce them.

The second shift is from concrete to abstract. Earlier fractions questions can be answered by looking at a picture of a shaded shape; at this level a child has to reason about equivalence without one. Patterns stop being “what comes next” and become “what is the rule”, which is the beginning of algebra. Data questions stop asking which bar is tallest and start asking for averages and comparisons across categories.

The third shift is reading load. Comprehension passages introduce inference — questions whose answers are implied rather than stated — and vocabulary work moves from definitions to usage and shades of meaning. A child who reads accurately but literally often meets their first real difficulty here.

Sample Problems at This Level

These show the kind of thinking each topic now demands. Numbers and names are randomised on every worksheet, so no two prints are the same.

Multi-step word problem: “A school orders 15 boxes of exercise books with 24 books in each box. They give 90 books to Primary 1 and share the rest equally between 5 classes. How many books does each class get?” (Answer: 54.) Multiply, subtract, then divide — and the order matters.

Fractions: “Which is larger, 5/8 or 7/12?” (Answer: 5/8, since 15/24 > 14/24.) No diagram is given; the child has to find a common denominator to compare.

Pattern rule: “3, 7, 15, 31, ___. What is the rule and the next term?” (Answer: double and add one; 63.) The answer requires stating the rule, not just continuing the sequence.

Data interpretation: A bar chart of books read by four children across a term, with questions asking for the mean, the difference between highest and lowest, and how many more one child would need to read to reach the average.

Logic puzzle: “Three friends each have a different pet and a different favourite colour. Aisha does not like blue. The person with the cat likes green…” Deductive reasoning with no arithmetic at all.

Common Mistakes at Grade 3

These are the error patterns worth watching for when you mark a sheet. Most are reasoning slips rather than arithmetic slips, which means correcting the sum will not fix them:

Answering the first step only. In a two-step problem the child calculates correctly and stops, giving the intermediate figure as the answer. Ask them to reread the question aloud after they finish and check it was actually answered.

Adding fractions straight across. Writing 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. Nearly universal at some point, and a sign that fractions are being treated as two separate whole numbers rather than one quantity.

Confusing area and perimeter. Usually because both are “the answer you get from the sides”. Reliably fixed by asking which one you would measure to buy carpet and which to buy skirting board.

Reading only the first line of a comprehension question. Inference questions often begin with a phrase that looks like a recall question, and a child scanning for the answer will find a plausible sentence and stop.

Rounding at the wrong moment. Estimating each part of a calculation, then combining the estimates, and being surprised the result is far off. Estimation questions here deliberately reward rounding at the end.

Getting the Most From a Worksheet

Mark the reasoning, not just the answer. At this level a wrong answer with a sound method is far more encouraging — and more informative — than a right answer arrived at by guessing. Asking “how did you get that?” on a correct answer is as useful as asking it on a wrong one.

Keep sheets short enough to finish. Twenty mixed problems is a reasonable session; if a child is tiring at fifteen, generate fifteen. A finished worksheet builds willingness to do the next one, and willingness is the scarce resource by this age.

Mix topics deliberately. It is tempting to drill one weak area, but mixed sheets are closer to how school assessments work and stop a child solving by pattern-matching to the topic heading rather than reading the question.

My child can do the arithmetic but gets word problems wrong. What should I do?

That is the defining difficulty at this level and it is a reading and planning problem, not a maths one. Most commonly the child answers only the first step. Have them reread the question aloud after finishing and check that what they wrote actually answers what was asked.

How many problems should one worksheet have?

Around twenty mixed problems is a sensible session at this age. If your child is tiring before the end, generate fewer — a finished worksheet builds willingness to do the next one, and an abandoned one does the opposite.

Should I focus on one weak topic or mix topics?

Mix them. Mixed sheets match how school assessments work and stop a child solving by pattern-matching to the topic heading. Drill a single topic only when there is a specific gap to close, then return to mixed sheets.

Is this suitable for 11+ preparation?

The logic, patterns and reading comprehension topics overlap with 11+ style reasoning, so these worksheets are useful general preparation. For dedicated practice, the generator also has an 11+ verbal reasoning section with question types specific to that exam.
